NEW DELHI: Popular Bollywood singer Kailash Kher has been acquitted of allegations that his 2007 hit song ‘Bam Bam’ was insulting to religious feelings. The Bombay High Court dismissed the case, underlining that Kher had not meant to hurt anybody.
The trouble began with Narinder Makkar, a man in Ludhiana, going to file a complaint alleging that Kher’s song ‘Babbam Bam’, a composition in honor of Lord Shiva, was produced into a film with inappropriately attired ladies kissing each other. This, he clarified, offended Hindu culture and hurt Shiva believers’ sentiments.
The court disagreed, though, holding that the lyrics of the song were purely devotional and conveying gratitude towards Lord Shiva. The judges made it explicitly clear that merely because some activity was not liked by some set of people, it does not always amount to offending religious feelings.
This verdict therefore indicates Kailash Kher, clarifying that art itself, especially one created in the service of a god, should never be misconstrued as offending.
