KATHMANDU: Amid growing political tension in the capital, Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Chair Rajendra Lingden has urged the government not to fear the party’s planned protest today, emphasizing that the demonstration will be peaceful and symbolic, intended to oppose what he described as authoritarian governance.
In a Facebook post, Lingden wrote, “This is a peaceful and symbolic protest against the government’s autocratic behavior. They talk about democracy and republicanism, yet only preach to the people instead of practicing those values.”
He condemned restrictions on public movement under the guise of democracy, saying that barring citizens from entering public spaces contradicts the core ideals the government claims to uphold.
Despite a strict warning from the Ministry of Home Affairs against entering restricted zones in Kathmandu, the RPP is pushing ahead with its plan to march from three points in the city and gather for a mass demonstration at Bijuli Bazaar by noon.
The Home Ministry has expressed serious concern, warning that any breach of constitutional provisions or disruption of public order will be met with legal consequences.
The RPP protest coincides with an ongoing teachers’ movement, which has modified its schedule to clear the streets by midday, allowing space for the RPP rally. The convergence of multiple demonstrations is adding to the mounting political pressure on the government.
