KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has urged the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to intervene over what it describes as the “unlawful arrest” and alleged “police misconduct” involving its party president, Rabi Lamichhane.

A party delegation, including Acting General Secretary Kabindra Burlakoti and Chief Whip Santosh Pariyar, visited the NHRC office on Tuesday to express concern about Lamichhane’s treatment and request the commission’s involvement in safeguarding his rights.

On April 5, the Butwal bench of the Tulsipur High Court ordered Lamichhane to be held in judicial custody pending trial on charges related to the misappropriation of cooperative funds.

This ruling overturned a previous Rupandehi District Court decision that had granted his release on a bail of Rs 10 million.

He was subsequently arrested from his home in Kathmandu the same night. Due to Saturday being a public holiday, he remained in custody for two nights before being transferred to Bhairahawa Prison on April 6.
